Dr. Gilmour will be speaking about Penn College’s Strategy to Mitigate the Skills Gap. Successfully addressing the skills gap, specifically in STEM occupations, requires an understanding of current workforce needs and the modern skill sets employers seek. Gone are the days when an employee with a narrow combination of skills can succeed. Employers are increasingly challenged to find workers with the diverse array of skills needed to perform their jobs. The building performance sector is a specialized trade in which workers need to know a little about a lot, because they approach a building as a system. Workers must have an understanding of multiple skill trades such as HVAC, construction, carpentry, and electrical. At Pennsylvania College of Technology, our graduates are ready to thrive Day 1 on the job because of the well-rounded, hands-on education they receive. The College also addresses lifelong learning through Workforce Development programs that help companies update the skill sets of employees. The College’s National Sustainable Structures Center (NSSC) has been providing building performance training, national certification, and technical assistance to the Pennsylvania Weatherization Assistance Program and Pennsylvania energy utilities since 1985. This technical training is enhanced with essential competencies needed in the industry: leadership, team building, and communication.
Keynote Speaker - John Shingler Ph.D.
John Shingler received his Ph.D. in Community Studies from Penn State. He currently is the head of Community and Economic Development at Penn State. He has worked with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission since 1981 and was one of the original developers of the Low Income Usage Reduction Program.
John will speak about the early history and origins of LIURP, how it was developed and its relationship to the Weatherization Assistance Program, and about the changes he has seen since the program started.
