Energy Efficiency Day: The Power of Community
October 5 is National Energy Efficiency Day (#EEDay2016), the first national day of recognition for conserving energy resources. We at the Building Performance Association (HPC) are supporting Energy Efficiency Day by putting the spotlight on the best way to manage our energy demand.
As the Vice President of Education and Events at HPC, I have a unique seat for observing the power of our community and what we do to bolster the impact of energy efficiency. Each year HPC brings approximately 3,000 residential energy efficiency professionals together through our national and regional conferences, workshops and forums, and online education. On this first Energy Efficiency Day, I’d like to share with you what I see as the impact these gatherings have on our nation’s health, comfort, and energy use. I think it’s a pretty awesome thing to consider.
Approximately 2,000 of the folks we see at our events are individual attendees who take time out of their busy schedules and make the investment to attend. This is something we not only appreciate, but are truly humbled by. It’s not so much the support of our organization that humbles us, but rather the commitment they make to connecting, learning, and bringing the solutions they learn back home to improve their communities. The sheer number of lives that are touched because of this commitment to make the world a better, more energy efficient place, is incredible.
The experience and wealth of knowledge that has been shared from our podiums is unparalleled in this space. In 2016 alone, we have had 300 members of our community present at our conferences. I hear it said so often - the altruistic spirit that underlies the flow of information across the residential energy efficiency industry is not only uncommon, it is flat-out amazing! As an educator at heart, this is probably what I am most proud of on this Energy Efficiency Day.
Each of our conferences features a trade show that connects our attendees with products and services, allowing them to better serve their clients. The knowledge and solutions found in our trade shows play such a big role in communities around the country stepping up their energy efficiency game. The supportive relationships between our exhibitors and their clients are a testament to the types of people who are drawn to the work our community does.
Finally, it’s our sponsors and the investments they make in our organization, and the industry as a whole, that allow us to do what we do at a reasonable cost to our attendees. The number of lives impacted by these investments cannot be overlooked. To all of those who are making an investment in the success of our industry and the growing awareness of the power of residential energy efficiency - thank you!
On this first Energy Efficiency Day, I am moved by the impact our contribution is making on the energy efficiency of this country. I am even more moved when I consider the impact that YOU - our attendees, presenters, exhibitors, and sponsors have on your community today and every day.
What a great community we have and at HPC we are proud to have been our gathering place for more than 30 years!
